The busy intersection of Gaffey, Vermont, Anaheim, and Palos Verdes Drive North is used by many to get to and from San Pedro. Located there is a small strip mall anchored by a 7-Eleven, a cleaners, and a Mexican restaurant named Tacos El Galoso. They have been in operation since September 2019.
Because of the multi-way intersection, one has to exercise caution to successfully navigate into the parking lot. Only 8 or so parking spaces are available and both times I visited I was fortunate to find a space to park. Otherwise, you will have to park across the street and walk across the busy intersection. Due to the current orders, service is limited to take out.
Tacos El Galoso is known for Tacos Dorados de Birria. This taco caught quickly proliferated Instagram images when Teddy’s Red Tacos opened. Tacos Dorados de Birria is made with beef that has been slow-cooked for hours with various chiles and spices. The shredded beef is combined with cheese inside a corn tortilla and fried. The result is a crunchy fried shell that is juicy and delicious. The set of three birria tacos includes a beef consomé dipping sauce.
Tacos Dorados de Papa is another variation of fried tacos from the same region. The taco is filled with diced potatoes, folded and topped with avocado, lettuce, and onion. I enjoyed the crunchiness of the tacos and both the red and green salsas provided a nice flavor boost. Fresh lime juice nicely enhances the flavor of the salsa verde green sauce.
The quesadilla was average and street tacos (birria, steak, grilled chicken, or grilled pork) are made with flour tortillas and topped with chopped cilantro and onions. They supply both red and green salsa with each order.
In addition to soft drinks, they also offer agua fresca and horchata.
Prices are quite reasonable. Street tacos are $2.49, quesadillas are $7.99, and three Tacos Dorados de Birria with beef consomé is $8.49.
The strip mall they are located in has a limited amount of parking spaces available. If you visit during their peak hours, you may have to park across the street.
