A Royal Treat at Subhannahong Thai Cuisine

September 26, 2018 by Bryan

For my birthday I don’t like going for the tried and true. Instead, I like trying new places. A Thai restaurant named Subhannahong Royal Thai Cuisine caught my attention and I asked my wife if we could celebrate there. Subhannahong resides on Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach.

Most establishments with a PCH address are easy to find. Located in a two-story building, Subhannahong has a parking lot off of Avenue E. Because their sign isn’t street level and a parking lot on PCH doesn’t exist, it is easy to miss Subhannahong.

Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crab

The Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crab is a delicious appetizer. The name “Salt and Pepper” is given to many Asian seafood dishes and doesn’t adequately describe the taste. A dipping sauce made with fish sauce was very good, but we particularly enjoyed the taste and the presentation of the minced fried garlic topping.

200 Years Pad Thai – based on a recipe served to the Royal Thai Family

200 Years Pad Thai is based on the original recipe prepared for the Thai royal family, I thought that it was rather clever to arrive in deconstructed fashion. The ingredients are placed on the dish unmixed. Even the salt and the red pepper flakes are on the rim of the dish. This allows the diner to prepare the Pad Thai to their liking. The grilled prawn nicely added to the presentation.

Penang Curry with Beef

We selected medium spice for the Panang with beef and that was plenty hot for us. Many LA area penang currys are strong in peanut flavor, creamy and slightly sweet. Subhannahong’s version appeared more like India red curry and did not exhibit a strong peanut flavor and was spicier than most.

Chef Special that day – Glass Noodles with Prawns mixed with cilantro and bacon.

Their menu board listed Glass Noodles with Prawns.as one of the Chef’s Specials that day. Since glass noodles are known for absorbing sauce, I immediately latched on to this. I was surprised at the delivery as it included sliced bacon and fresh cilantro. While I wonder if this was authentic, it was quite tasty. and of course, everything tastes better with bacon.

Most Thai restaurants only have Pineapple Fried Rice as their fried rice and I was blown away that Subhannahong has 8 different varieties including crab, green curry, Tom Yum, and fried shrimp paste fried rice.

Subhannahong is open for lunch starting at 11:30. They have 11 different lunch specials each served with a side salad, veggie spring roll, and jasmine rice or brown rice. They are a great deal priced at only $10 each.

The food that Subhannahong provides is quite tasty. What elevates themselves from other Thai restaurants is their presentation. If these dishes were served to Thai royalty, I feel fortunate that I don’t have to travel to Thailand.
