Playa Provisions Delivers Delicious Weekend Brunch

September 18, 2020 by Bryan

Playa Provisions is one of a group of restaurants owned by the husband/wife duo of Nick Roberts and Brooke Williamson. The couple also owns and operates Hudson House, Tripel, and Da Kikokiko. Williamson is a former Top Chef winner and has an impressive background working in kitchens such as Michael’s, Boxer and Zax.

Playa Provisions is located beachside in Playa Vista. They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch on their newly expanded patio. To ramp up on COVID safety, their dining space has been reconfigured for socially distant dining and plexiglass has been installed between indoor and outdoor booths.

Reservations are suggested and my wife and I were rewarded with seating in the beautiful back patio. The area is fully sheltered from the wind and has bench seating made from varnished pine so that the wood is protected from the ocean air. Plexiglass partitions are placed between each table.

Three Kumamoto Oysters

The Kumamoto mussels (Baja Peninsula) have a mild brine with hints of cucumber. They are clean and extremely fresh. Because I enjoyed their natural taste, I didn’t add any of the sauces they provided.

Maple Bacon Cinnamon Bun from Playa Provisions

The Maple Bacon Cinnamon Bun turns heads as it is delivered to the tables. It rides tall on the plate and is topped with cream cheese frosting and candied bacon. We had to quickly pack this in a to-go box before we ate the entire confection.

Lobster Roll - Playa Provisions

Fresh lobster is mixed with pickled mustard seed, chopped celery, and topped with crushed potato chips. They add the mixture to a buttered and toasted split top bun to make their Lobster Roll. The dressing has some red pepper which adds a bit of spiciness to the sandwich. The toasted roll and the crushed potato chips added a nice crunchy experience.

Seafood Louie - Playa Provisions
Seafood Louie

Growing up, I didn’t care for fish and I usually ordered a seafood louie when it was available.  Their Seafood Louie uses crisp romaine instead of iceberg and they load it up with premium shellfish like tiger shrimp, lobster and dungeness crab. They even add the smaller bay shrimp to boost the amount of seafood. If you like shellfish, this is the dish to order.

If you are more into breakfast food, they have quite a few items available such as Beet Cured Salmon Bagel, Cajun Shrimp and Dungeness Crab Benedict, Pretzel Croissant with scrambled egg and gruyere and Turmeric Poached Eggs. Special diet items include Cream of Wheat with Quinoa with fresh fruit and honey and Coconut Chia Seed Pudding.

Playa Provisions is a terrific weekend destination. You can escape your house and enjoy food that is extremely fresh and thoughtfully prepared. They have reconfigured their outdoor patio to adhere to the city guidelines and have recently extended their dining space to a portion of their parking lot.
