Locale is a new food delivery service in LA. Unlike Doordash, Postmates, and Grub Hub, Locale provides a curated selection of entrees, sandwiches, baked goods, and gourmet desserts. Delivery service takes place each Friday afternoon and the delivery fee is only $5.00!
The idea came about during the pandemic. Co-owners Jonathan Friedland and Chris Clark started the Locale delivery service to allow customers to obtain food without having to leave their homes. The most innovative part of the service is that you can receive products from multiple local businesses, all for a single delivery fee from a single order.
Locale’s business model is built around the needs of the local businesses and farms. When you order on Locale, you wait a few days to get your delivery. Their business partners need this time to plan their production to eliminate waste and give their staff the time they need to fulfill the products they offer.
To place an order, access https://la.shoplocale.com/. The home page reminds customers that delivery day takes place on that Friday, and a countdown clock is a reminder of the deadline (hours and seconds) for orders delivered that Friday. This site acts as a shopping portal to many eateries in LA.
I ordered from Locale twice, and I was impressed with both deliveries. The first time I chose Burritos La Palma, their burritos “con todo” (with everything $19). Their handmade flour tortillas are filled with shredded beef birria, refried beans, and cheese. Their flour tortillas set the stage for freshness, and the tasty beef birria does the rest.
I selected a lemon bar ($4), a sea salt brownie ($4), and two oatmeal cranberry cookies ($4 ea) from Sweet Lady Jane for dessert. The winner by far was their dark chocolate chip cookies, but it was a nice feature to order them individually instead of by the dozen.
Last week I selected Langer’s iconic #19 build your pastrami sandwich ($74). It includes all ingredients you need to assemble two to three #19s, plus leftovers. Their rye bread is fluffy soft, and you immediately are hit with its pleasant malty-sweet aroma, then the tender, juicy smoked pastrami.
For dessert, I selected two eclairs ($8 ea.) from Amandine Patisserie in Brentwood. Biting into the eclair, you experience the super-rich dark chocolate shell, the buttery pastry, and the gushing of rich custard.
Finally, Locale has recently partnered with The French Florist. Consider them for your special someone on Valentine’s Day. You can’t beat their $5 delivery fee!
