Hash Delivers Creative Takes on Breakfast

March 5, 2020 by Bryan

Silicon Beach is garnering more attention these days. It is the place to be for tech startups. With the exception of Venice, the restaurant scene lagged behind and it wasn’t until recently that some interesting new restaurants appeared. One such place is Hash, a breakfast venue located in Playa Vista.

Inside Hash

Hash is owned and operated by FCF, LLC led by Peter Georges. This restaurant group also owns Rodini Park, a Greek kitchen in North Hollywood. Last year, Georges opened up another Rodini Park in Playa Vista, a stone’s throw from Hash.

With the exception of a few bar seats by the front window, the majority of Hash’s seating is outdoors. A concrete wall with tall plants provides diners with some privacy and the umbrellas protect against the sun.

Fortunately, a menu is posted outside and if you are the indecisive type you can spend time outside pondering the many choices. The selections are creative takes on many breakfast classics. With names like Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes and Custard Stuffed French Toast, you quickly get the idea.

Hash on Hash

Their signature Hash on Hash consists of regular and sweet potato tots, a choice of protein and cheese, topped with two fried eggs and drizzled with garlic aioli. I selected braised beef which turned out to be nicely seasoned and extremely tender. The beef mixed well with the fried eggs and aioli.

Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon

Since their name is Hash, they use hash browns instead of English muffins on their Eggs Benedict. A generous amount of smoked salmon, two fried eggs, fried capers, and sliced avocado is placed on top. They then pour hollandaise sauce on the top so that it oozes down the sides. Even the side salad made with arugula and tossed with a Greek dressing is delicious.

Hash - Carrot Cake Waffle

Hash doesn’t feature desserts, but two items on the menu can easily fill that need. The Carrot Cake Belgian Waffle is carrot cake in disguise as a waffle. It was topped with drizzled cream cheese which melted into the square holes of the waffle and dusted with powdered sugar. All I can say is WOW; this waffle doesn’t need butter or syrup and is easily shared.

Hash - Bread Pudding

The other dessert-like item is called Country Faire and is listed under their French Toast selections. Bread pudding in the shape of a churro is placed inside french toast batter and deep-fried. It is served with tres leches sauce and dusted with powdered sugar. Once you take a bite of this, your eyes get big and you can’t believe how good it tastes. This too is easily shared as a dessert.

Hash is set up as a fast-casual restaurant. Once you enter, you can watch the action in the kitchen as you make your way towards the counter. After you pay, you are given a number on a stand to place on the table of your choosing. Ice water, coffee and eating utensils are available on a self-service station outside. They feature Groundwork Coffee, California’s first certified organic roaster. Groundwork’s offee is certified kosher and non-GMO.

If you enjoy breakfast and want to experience something both different and delicious, I highly encourage you to give Hash a visit. I was pleasantly surprised and I think you will be too.

Hours are 8:00 am – 2:00 pm daily. Parking validated in the adjacent parking structure.
