Egg Slut Opens in Venice

November 28, 2016 by Bryan

z_eggslutIt seems like ages ago, but I actually had my first “Slut” from Egg Slut back when they were roving the streets of LA in a food truck. Served in a small glass jar, it was a rather unique presentation. That day, they were serving lunch in front of the now defunct bookstore, Mysterious Galaxy in Redondo Beach.

Thanks to their Grand Central Market location, many people have had the opportunity to experience one of chef Alvin Cailan’s egg creations. Hearing about the long lines, I decided not to experience that and I was happy to learn of their new location in Venice. I visited them on a recent Saturday.

Fortunately, there was a parking lot directly across from them on Pacific Ave. I arrived just after they opened and I was glad that there were only a handful of people in the restaurant. Egg Slut has an industrial look and only a couple of tables were available. Most of it was counter top dining with stools.

For nostalgia’s sake, I ordered the Slut. It was delivered just like it was on the food truck, the coddled egg with pureed potato was served in a small glass jar and served with toasted slices of baguette. The flavor was significantly enhanced with the grey sea salt and the chopped chives.

I took the remainder home to share with my family: the Fairfax breakfast sandwich with soft scrambled eggs, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese and bacon. I’m a sucker for a good biscuit and so I ordered one of these as well.

After placing both in the oven, I was amazed at how tasty they were. The biscuit was airy and crisp on the outside. After spreading the maple butter on it, they were even better.

I requested bacon to be added to the Fairfax. It was difficult to eat in a civilized manner because the soft scrambled eggs were mixed with melted cheddar and were falling out of the sides each time you took a bite. Unlike some brioche buns, this was light and didn’t fill you up; it was the perfect bun for this sandwich.

In addition to their breakfast offerings, Egg Slut also offers high end burgers sourced from quality ingredients. An example of this is their seared wagyu tri tip steak, red onions, medium egg and arugula on brioche.

Glad I can get my Slut without having to make the drive downtown.
