August is National Sandwich Month

August 7, 2019 by Bryan

August is National Sandwich Month. It is believed that the sandwich originated when the fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montague (1718-1793) invented it out of necessity. As the story goes, he was playing cards and did not want to leave the gaming table to eat. He asked for a serving of roast beef to be placed between two slices of bread so he could eat with his hands. Thus the sandwich was born.

Several LA restaurants are featuring sandwich specials for a limited amount of time.

Lucky Bird - Juicy Lucy
The Juicy Lucy – a collaboration between Lucky Bird and Cheezus

Juicy Lucy

I recently visited Lucky Bird and experienced the Juicy Lucy first-hand. It is two sandwiches in one and large enough to satisfy two people. The ingredients are first-rate and because the chicken is set in a special citrus brine, the chicken is both moist and tender. You can experience this sandwich next Saturday, Aug 10, at Lucky Bird at the Grand Central Market or next Sunday, Aug 11, at Smorgasburg LA. For details, see my recent post.

Mickey’s Buffalo Chicken Sandwich

Buffalo Chicken Sandwich

Mickey’s Italian Deli is a South Bay icon and it has been around for 65 years. Despite their longevity, they manage to keep it fresh by featuring different specials. They celebrate National Sandwich Month by introducing the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich.

Mickey’s hand breads a chicken breast and then deep-fries it. They add provolone cheese, smother it with Franks Red Hot sauce and top it with ranch dressing, crisp lettuce, tomato and served it on a toasted french roll.
