Alma’s Cookies and Company Restaurant – Delicious Southern Cuisine

June 12, 2020 by Bryan

Given today’s times, I made a conscious decision to accomplish two objectives with a single post. The first was to select a black-owned business. The second was to continue my goal in supporting independently owned small restaurants. I decided to try Alma’s Cookies and Company Restaurant in Compton.

Alma’s Cookies and Company is located in downtown Compton

Like most restaurants in LA County, Alma’s Cookies and Company Restaurant is open for take-out only. Because of that, I phoned them directly to place my order. I prefer to have my money go to the restaurant instead of the restaurant having to pay an online food delivery service, even if I decide to use them for pick-up.

Alma’s Cookies and Company Restaurant is located in a strip mall on Compton Blvd midway between Wilmington Ave and Alameda St. Their parking lot had plenty of spaces available. The restaurant’s dining room was closed and the business was limited to a take-out counter operation.

After arriving at home, I unpacked everything to share with the family. I was quite blown away with how much food I received. Each entree selection also included three sides and a cornbread muffin. It was enough food for nearly three meals!

The chef is an expert with seasonings. Each item was uniquely seasoned and we kept nodding our heads in delight as we tried everything. The fried southern catfish did not exhibit a greasy exterior and the fish was tender and fresh. The pork chops were thick yet tender and were nicely seasoned.

Even the sides were delicious. The collard greens included smoked ham and had a mild vinegar taste. The macaroni and cheese was made with fusilli pasta combined with multiple kinds of cheese and browned so that the top was a delicious piece of burnt cheese. The green beans, too, were nicely seasoned, but the big surprise for me was their yams. I usually dislike eating yams and yet, their yams bordered between mildly sweet to candied yams.

Each entree with three sides ranged between $15 and $16, quite a deal for the amount of food received. If you don’t need that much food, their lunch specials are even a better bargain at $9.99 each. Presently, they have a choice of Chicken Wing, Turkey Chop, Pork Chop and Catfish. Each is bundled with two sides and a cornbread muffin.
