Cinco de Mayo is this Friday, May 5. Quite a few LA area restaurants have made plans to feature new items and beverages. It’s a great opportunity to visit that place that has been on your wish list or sample something new from a tried and true favorite. Since the holiday falls on a Friday, you don’t have to worry about it interfering with your workweek.

Border Grill, 445 S Figueroa St. #100 Downtown LA – Border Grill will feature $3.50 tacos ranging from grilled fish topped with a cucumber citrus slaw and jalapeño aioli to a juicy ribeye with roasted peppers. $5 appetizers include chipotle crab roll, mini queso fundido with chorizo and calamari. Their house margarita is $7 and a live DJ will spin tunes 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Cabo Cantina, 11829 Wilshire Blvd, Brentwood – Individuals with a flexible work schedule can join the fun as early as 10:00 a.m. at Cabo Cantina. Their Cinco de Drinko celebration will feature 99 cent Coronitas. To keep up with the demand, a special draft beer station will be stood up. Happy Hours take place as usual from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. until midnight.
Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Dr, La Cañada Flintridge – Enjoy a Mexican buffet dinner with with a taco station, homemade chicken tamales, cheese enchiladas and more! A live mariachi and a Floreo Charro dancer will perform. Tickets available here.
Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern (JFAT), 1733 Ocean Ave. Santa Monica – JFAT is best known for their modern interpretations of American comfort food. This week, however, they are celebrating Cinco de Mayo in a big way with bold Mexican food and beverages. A full line-up craft margaritas featuring premium tequilas and unique ingredients such as muddled citrus and jalapeno syrup.
Their JFAT Nachos are prepared with tortilla chips topped with a beer cheese sauce, sirloin & black bean chili, sour cream, guacamole and fresh pico de gallo. Choose from a pair of artisan tacos such as blackened fish of the day, spiced shrimp, Battered Alaskan cod or the one that has my name on it: ‘Baja Style Lobster’ with beer battered lobster, papaya salsa and avocado. JFAT locations in Woodland Hills, Brea, Dana Point and San Diego are also featuring this special.
Mercado, 7910 W 3rd St, Los Angeles – From 4:00 p.m. until midnight, this trio of upscale Mexican eateries will be shaking up one-night-only $13 watermelon-basil margaritas, along with a $10 Tromba house margarita. There’ll also be $9 Tromba shots, $4 cans of Modelo, and $9 plates of guacamole and carnitas tacos. Look for deals at the affiliated Yxta Downtown and Maradentro in Brentwood and Studio City too.
Petty Cash Taqueria, 7360 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles – Petty Cash will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with an all-day party that will go beyond their normal hours. The party will start at 11:00 a.m. and will continue until 1:00 a.m. with a DJ, balloon artist and drink specials. If you’re interested in attending during the day, you’ll have to make a reservation as walk-in’s are only welcome after 5:00 p.m.
Red O, 1541 Ocean Ave #120, Santa Monica – Pair up Red O’s modern Mexican cuisine alongside all-night drink specials, including $5 beers, $5 Modelo micheladas, $10 Cabo Wabo margaritas, and tequila shots. There’ll be music at all locations, including Santa Monica, which will kick things off with a DJ at 4:00 p.m. followed by duo Michael Alvarado & Sylvia from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Shutters on the Beach, 1 Pico Blvd. Santa Monica – Prefer a classy event with a beach breeze? If so, Shutters on the Beach has the ideal party for you! Executive Chef Vittorio Lucariello will host an interactive chef’s table and will prepare fresh ceviche. Craft margaritas will be paired with the ceviche creations starting at 5:00 p.m.
